HA10 - Pavlov's Dogs Task 1
Devil May Cry
Personally, I love playing Devil May cry. From the gory fighting to the stylish attacks and finishers you can execute your enemies with. Devil May Cry has always been one of my favourites, for multiple reasons, but when it comes to why I play the game, its more for self satisfaction and stress release. As many people know, Devil May Cry is one of the most violent games that in themselves promote violence across each of the Devil May Cry games. The entire games mechanics and functions are based around making a bloody mess of demons while still looking cool at the same time. The game its self is a great source of entertainment, especially as all you do in the game is slash demons down with ridiculously large swords with incredible powers. Despite playing the game so much, there has never been another reason for playing that game other than pure satisfaction and entertainment. However, other people that have come to buy this game may be provided with more than just entertainment content, such as content that quenches their urge to know more about this style of game. For example, this game has a lot of mythical history and legend based off of real life legends and myths, people may this very interesting and so may seek to find of more on the matter. Being any game without online features now days can be very stressful as most people tend to enjoy the social interaction side of games more than linear more campaign focused games. Fact of the matter, Devil May Cry would be more successful if it had such online and social interaction features built in, as it would bring the game more limitless enjoyable hours with your friends. This would drive me to continue playing the game and so would be another reason for me playing it, IF it had those features.
From what I have played, I have decoded that the jokes in the game are passive, they are thrown in often to give the game more attention and humour, however other people may disagree and say that they are intentionally used to touch on Dantes growth throughout the games and how much he has matured, therefore showing character development.
The Uses and Gratification theory
Uses and gratifications theory is an approach to understanding why and how people actively seek out specific media to satisfy specific needs. Evidently commonly found within games (UGT) is an audience-centered approach to understanding mass communication.
Considering its plot is simply about a demon slayer out to slay more demons while obtaining special powers and comrades on the way, just as the UGT theory suggests, I cannot imagine anyone else playing such a game for any other reason other then for entertainment and enjoyment. Of course most if not all games are played for entertainment, but this game is exclusively has that satisfaction factor. All devil may cry games are single player campaign, they have no online play, however, it does have
As mentioned Devil May Cry also contains lots of humour throughout the story, as Dante, the main protagonist in search of his brother finds strange demons that are out to kill him, but since he is basically immortal, he constantly makes jokes of their incompetence. This also convinces me that DMC has focused more on the entertainment side of the game rather than the seriousness that is the story line, as the world is being corrupted by demons. Even though previous have been different in terms of fighting styles and humour factors. Before the 3rd sequel, Devil May Cry was rather serious about its story and characters.
